The ancient and historic city of Badagry has a fascinating history of Kingship (Wheno Aholuship) AND its Traditional Chieftaincy institution.

Founded around the third quarter of the fifteen century (precisely 1425) by Akran Gbafoe, the ancient city of Badagry originally known as OGBAGBELEME, contracted to (GBAGI), and through poor pronunciation, corrupted by the Europeans to BADAGRY means in Ogu Language of the people an extensive farm land surrounded by the swam.

As a matter of fact and for the avoidance of doubt, the earliest Monarch for the Badagry stool had its root from Accra in the old Gold Coast through the Ga/Ewe speaking group historically reputed to have migrated from the ancient Ketu Kingdom (part of Oduduwa major Kingdom) which left Ile-Ife around the mid- thirteenth century (1275) The Aja/Ogu speaking group later became part of the main Ketu group. Other Kingdoms were later established and Badagry Kingdom was established during the sixteenth Century around 1560.

All kingdoms established remained to date, part of the major ODUDUWA KINGDOM.

The Sacred traditional Institution of the Wheno Aholu (Kingship) in Badagry Kingdom had produced fifteen (15) kings (AKRANS OF BADAGRY) whose supremacy had traditionally been recognized from centuries. The monarchy in Badagry from the earliest times up to the present had been headed by the Wheno Aholu (King). Akran of Badagry from Jegba quarter – (The quarters off the beaded crown) while the remaining seven quarters of the ancient Badagry City and other territories (villages) within Badagry district have from time immemorial, been governed by the seven traditional white-cap high chiefs; High Chiefs WAWU AGOLOTO, JEGEN, MOBEE, BALA, FINSHENTO AND POSU.
