The people of Badagry are the OGUN people common referred to as Ogu and speak Ogugbe (Ogu) language. They are industrious, courageous and painstaking people from four main stocks namely Whedahs, the Whals, the Whemes and the Ga/Ewe/Ajah respectively. The Yoruba traders and adventures from the himlerland later settled in and round Badagry and its environs. The Ogu people have their kith and kins in the Republic of Benin (former Dahomey), today’s Ghana (former Gold Coast) and the Republic of Togo and in the Egbado-South area of Ogun State of Nigeria.
As enterprising and industrious people, they settled along the coastline stretching from Kweme sea beach, going through the previously well known “ Aimlofide” or Menukunme contracted to “Mekunen” at the Victoria Island, Lagos.
