ECONOMY

Although some treaties and declarations were signed and entered into between the Akran of Badagry his white capped High Chiefs and Her majesty the Queen of Great Britain between 1842 to 1864, it became apparently significant that such treaties e.g. Treaty of Commerce of 19th June 1863 were merely to prepare the ground for the effective and eventual commercial development of Badagry. Which was in fact a notable commercial Centre for such precious commodities like species, beads and palm produce which attracted sufficient economic activities in the international export trade.

Presently, there are some industries at Badagry such as modern furniture factory, modern electrical fitting and accessories factory, Government – owned pottery industry, coconut fibre industry, sawmill factories and ago-allied ventures. Waterways: The Badagry creek with its natural waterways served as an important port of call to ocean going steamers in the nineteenth century such as “EUCASTADOR” which sailed out of the international port of Badagry on 23rd September, 1864 with export crop European countries Badagry was a very important and busy port and was used for the transportation of slaves and the missionary journeys to the African soil in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries of course the traders and explores used the creek to connect other waterways like the Yewa and Oluge to places like Oke-Odan, Abeokuta, Ketu, Old Oyo and other parts of the hinterland.

In the olden, days, the waterway was the main means of transport between Lagos and Badagry on one hand and Badagry and Porto-Novo on the other Water transportation by the people was very popular ad big sailing boats and fishing boats were freely used.
